It’s helpful for “regular” people to know that even people who are well known are still fraught with the troubles in life that the rest of us encounter. Though we don’t wish abuse on anyone, the fact that others we may look up to suffer as well and who recover from their suffering to be successful can give us hope.
The biggest secret still in the world of children and families is how prevalent child abuse, spouse abuse, and the sorrow that accompanies these injustices is–and that society, even after all these years, has not seemed to be able to do more to protect families. A great deal has changed since I began practicing in the early 1980s–at that time the police would not intervene on an abuse call. Now they do, but still, the family is not protected enough.
What is needed? Education, financial resources, more information to women and children about where they can go to be safe. Hope. To find their voice.
There are domestic violence hotlines nationally that you can call, and local shelters in most communities. Reach out if you are scared, reach out if you want help.
I work with those who have been abused, especially women who didn’t realize how powerful those early years were, and who now are recovering a sense of respect and self empowerment.
